There also people who wear them simply to protect their eyes from bright sunshine. Sales of sunglasses are soaring. In 1990, purchases amounted to $800 million. Today, it is an $1.5 billion business and still growing.“Sunglasses should be worn by people who need them, not for cosmetic reasons,” insists Dr. Alden H. Haffner, president of the College Optometry,  State  University of New York. “Wearing tinted glasses cuts down on visibility; wearing them all the time may make eyes extra sensitive to light.”Sunglasses are useful at the beach, when skiing, and other times when one is exposed to bright sun. They also help to reduce glare when driving. However, they should not be used after dark because they limit visibility. Most experts also discourage wearing sunglasses indoors unless prescribed by a specialist.Lenses are sold in various colors.

Ophthalmologists recommend gray, brown, and green in that order. Pink, blue, or violet lenses may be fashionable but they will distort the colors that you see. If you decide to buy sunglasses, Your selection should be made with great care since few standards regulate the industry. Sunglasses are best fitted by an optician. Either glass or plastic lenses are available. Glass, unlike plastic, filters out infrared rays. Both filter out ultraviolet rays. Plastic, however, is lighter and may be more comfortable.

Under normal conditions the sun will not damage the eyes. However, when the sun is exceptionally bright or there is glare, sunglasses can help protect delicate eye tissues.
